Prebiotics can interfere with the absorption of certain medications which include; antidepressants, anti-epileptics, penicillin, digoxin and lithium. They may also reduce blood sugar levels which should be taken into consideration if you take diabetes medication such as insulin and metformin. In particular, Acacia can decrease the absorption of amoxicillin, an antibiotic commonly used to treat urinary tract infections (UTIs), chest infections and ear infections in children. It is recommended the prebiotics (containing acacia gum) are administered 4 hours pre- or post-amoxicillin.
